My favorite style of curriculum—for so many reasons—is unit studies! But what exactly are they? Unit studies are an engaging educational approach that weaves together multiple subjects around a central theme. This method allows students to dive deep into a topic, exploring various disciplines—such as science, history, art, and literature—through hands-on activities, projects, and lively discussions. The goal is to create a cohesive and enjoyable learning experience.
One of the best aspects of unit studies is their shorter duration, typically lasting just 4-5 weeks. This keeps my kids engaged without feeling overwhelmed, helping them maintain their excitement for learning and encouraging creativity. With unit studies, it’s easy to immerse ourselves in the topic and truly bring it to life! Another advantage is that the entire family can participate, with lessons tailored to each child's academic level while still being connected.
As we journey through our unit studies, I’ll be sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly—what we loved and what we didn’t, along with ideas and inspiration! My goal is to help you determine if a specific unit study is the right fit for you. Currently, we’re primarily using Gather Round, which is where we started. I love the layout of each lesson, but we’re also branching out to explore new options, like The Heritage School House for our chicken unit!
